A note on the links

Every source in this archive was verified at the time of entry, and broken links are removed as we find them. Even so, publishers routinely restructure their archives, retire URLs, or place stories behind paywalls — so a link that worked yesterday may redirect to a search page, a section front, or a subscription wall tomorrow. If a link no longer resolves cleanly, it should still land you on the publisher's site with enough context — headline, byline, date — to run a quick search and recover the piece.

Previews vary too. YouTube segments and major newspaper articles usually render a thumbnail; some outlets, podcasts, court filings, and archival pages will show a logo or nothing at all. That is a limitation of what each publisher exposes, not a defect in the record — the source itself is still one click away.

Subject of the first permanent injunction against a method of execution in American history. His bench trial produced the factual finding — one to three minutes of severe, conscious air hunger — that the Eleventh Circuit converted into a constitutional holding. Alabama abandoned the method it had invented.

Stood in the execution chamber as spiritual advisor for two of the eight nitrogen executions — Kenneth Smith (Alabama, Jan. 25, 2024) and Anthony Boyd (Alabama, Oct. 23, 2025), the first and the last. His contemporaneous testimony from those two nights — cited in federal court filings up through Lee v. Hamm — is the primary in-chamber eyewitness record of the method as it began and as it ended.

Approved the 2011 interstate custody transfer that delivered Demetrius Frazier from Michigan — an abolition state — to Alabama's death row.
